More pictures of M7 and Sense 5.0

It seems that yesterday pictures of M7 were not a fake. Today we have another portion of promising photos, this time published by androidpolice.com.
Source: www.androidpolice.com
Watermark on the screen makes those s trustworthy. It's a common watermark used by in beta-software. Looking at the lock-screen I can say that 5.0 is not that minor update as some have stated. I must say I'm getting more and more excited about it. And this is the back of the device:
Source: www.androidpolice.comThe back of the device seems to be made from the same material as One X+. Actually it looks quite the same with only flash led moved to the other side and slightly different camera body.
There are also more screenshots of Sense 5.0.
Source: www.androidpolice.com
The one on the left seems to be some kind of wther app connected with initial setup screen or some social center. In the center and the right you can see more details about incoming software like SDK API or kernel version. The rest is protected by , which is also very common in beta-software. It looks quite promising, don't you think so?
UPDATE 24.01.2013

Here are some more screenshots taken on Droid DNA device by mdeejay from xda-developers:

This looks very good! Hopefully we'll see new UI on One X/X+ as well.

Evolution of Renderscript Performance

Posted by R. Jason Sams, Android Renderscript Tech Ld

It’s been a yr since the last blog post on Renderscript, and with the relse of Android 4.2, it’s a good time to talk about the performance work that we’ve done since then. One of the major goals of this past yr was to improve the performance of common -processing operations with Renderscript.

style="border:1px solid #ddd;border-radius: 6px;" />

Figure 1. Renderscript -processing benchmarks run on different Android platform versions (Android 4.0, 4.1, and 4.2) in CPU only on a Galaxy device.

Figure 2. Renderscript -processing benchmarks comparing operations run with GPU + CPU to those run in CPU only on the same 10 device.

When you set out to improve performance, the first task is to msure it. To do this, we built a -processing benchmark suite. The tests msure how long it takes to apply a given processing operation to a roughly 1.7 million pixel bitmap. We then ran the benchmark using the same APK on the Galaxy and normalized the results from Ice Crm Sandwich to 1.0.

We made a few major improvements between ICS and Jelly Bn, which significantly reduced the overhd of short scripts as well as the cost of getting elements out of alloions. Going from Android 4.1 to Android 4.2, we added a of performance improvements to the math library. Our hardware partners also made major contributions; ARM in particular provided numerous compiler improvements which grtly improved our ability to erate vector .

Android 4.2 introduced another much more important change: For the first time on any mobile platform. we can use the GPU as a compute device. When run on a device that supports GPU compute, that same benchmark APK will run on the GPU. The chart in Figure 2 is normalized to the same basis as Figure 1.

The Cortex A15 in 10 is a very good CPU. However, that doesn’t mn we should lve resources idle. The Mali T604 is a very flexible and capable compute device capable of executing a large subset of RenderScript functionality. The green bar in Figure 2 shows what we can do when the Mali is enabled for RS compute. No effort is required on an app developer's part to enable this acceleration; the device will inspect ch script and decide which processor to run things automatically. It’s important to note that some scripts can’t be run on the GPU, and such scripts will automatically run on the CPU.

The best part is it doesn’t end here. Performance work is an ongoing effort. RenderScript performance in appliions will continue to improve over time as we continue to improve the platform.

To lrn more about using Renderscript, see the Renderscript Computation developer's guide.

Android Tablet Review : Advantages of Open OS

The success of tablets and smart based on the Android operating system dominate the world electronics market, not an event that occurs suddenly. But it has been designed since Google in November 2007 announced the formation of the Open Handset Alliance to develop the OS Open Source. Later, this open operating system called Android.
The first phone using Android operating system was relsed by Google with in 2008. The phone is called the T-Mobile G1 was launched in New York and is predicted by many to be able to shake the dominance of 's iPhone or BlackBerry smartphone.
G1 phone uses touch screen ftures and a sliding qwerty board. Fture WiFi, GPS, 3 megapixel camera, and instant messaging. G1 is equipped with various online appliions, such as Gmail, YouTube and also 'Google Maps Street View'.
Though the Android-based is not an extraordinary shake up the market, but it seems to attract some large companies to participate in developing the Android Operating System. At the end of 2008, 14 new members joined consisting of various companies in the field of technology. Among them are , ARM, tek, Garmin, Technologies, , and Vodafone.
is one of the successful companies adopt Android, from the series Galaxy S which was introduced in 2010 to the third version of the well received by the market. This success made other vendors have also relsed the Android-based tablet with a high specifiion. Of course, they are also competing to offer the cest price.
Android tablets on the market development also forms its own, namely the Android market. In the Android Market there are several segments in accordance with the development of Android.
Although it is an older version, Android 2.3 Gingerbrd version of Android is still the most widely used until the beginning of 2013, the rched 44.6 percent of the Android market. While the rest is controlled by Android Ice Crm Sandwich, and the latest version of Android, Jelly Bn.
The last tablet will adopt the latest version of Android. As for the previous product, typically update the latest version of android. Jelly Bn is a new version of Android that consists of two variants, namely 4.1 and 4.2
Android is an operating system based on the Linux kernel, and Android is an open operating system (open source). Appliion developers do not have to dl with procedures paid OS platform, because they made the appliion freely distributed with open source s, shareware or even freeware.
Google is serious about developing the first version of Android to version four or called Jelly Bn. From eration to eration, Android continues to experience significant progress. Ranging from technical performance, to display interface.
Since its launch the Android operating system version 1.1 Petit Four, February 9, 2009 Google showed that Android development is done continuously. Within a yr could be relsed two new Android version. Android now has rched version 4. Reportedly in 2013 Google will relse the latest version of Android called Lime Pie, is likely to carry the Android version 5.0.
Android as an open operating system managed to gather the actors in the field of mobile technology and tablets. Because they have the same interests, they form a synergy to shift the position of mobile and tablets based on other operating systems. Although substantially among the manufacturers that use the Android operating system also occurs tough competition.
Android did manage to shift the dominance of the iPhone and iPad. But it actually is a competition between the Android operating system used by many companies with iOS operating system used by . To date, no individual company can match .

Native RTL support in Android 4.2

Posted by Fabrice Di Meglio, Android Frameworks Tm

Android 4.1 (Jelly Bn) introduced limited support for bidirectional text in TextView and EditText elements, allowing apps to display and edit text in both left-to-right (LTR) and right-to-left (RTL) scripts. Android 4.2 added full native support for RTL layouts, including layout mirroring, allowing you to deliver the same grt app experience to all of your users, whether their language uses a script that rds right-to-left or one that rds left-to-right.

If you do nothing, your app will not change — it will continue to appr as it currently does. However, with a few simple changes, your app will be automatically mirrored when the user switches the system language to a right-to-left script (such as Arabic, Hebrew, or Persian). For example, see the following screenshots of the Settings app:

To take advantage of RTL layout mirroring, simply make the following changes to your app:

Declare in your app manifest that your app supports RTL mirroring.

Specifically, add android:supportsRtl="true" to the <appliion> element in your manifest file.

Change all of your app's "left/right" layout properties to new "start/end" equivalents.

If you are targeting your app to Android 4.2 (the app's targetSdkVersion or minSdkVersion is 17 or higher), then you should use “start” and “end” instd of “left” and “right”. For example, android:paddingLeft should become android:paddingStart.
If you want your app to work with versions rlier than Android 4.2 (the app's targetSdkVersion or minSdkVersion is 16 or less), then you should add “start” and end” in addition to “left” and “right”. For example, you’d use both android:paddingLeft and android:paddingStart.

For more precise control over your app UI in both LTR and RTL mode, Android 4.2 includes the following new APIs to help manage View components:

android:layoutDirection — attribute for setting the direction of a component's layout.
android:textDirection — attribute for setting the direction of a component's text.
android:textAlignment — attribute for setting the alignment of a component's text.

getLayoutDirectionFromLocale() — method for getting the Locale-specified direction

You can even crte custom versions of layout, drawables, and other resources for display when a right-to-left script is in use. Simply use the resource qualifier "ldrtl" to tag your resources, mning “layout direction right-to-left”. To debug and optimize custom right-to-left layouts, HierarchyViewer now lets you see start/end properties, layout direction, text direction, and text alignment for all the Views in the hierarchy.

It's now sy to crte butiful Android apps for all your users, whether they use a right-to-left or left-to-right language. We look forward to seeing some grt apps!

bootloader or flashing custom ROM doesn't void your warranty!

Since started htev.com with the possibility to unlock bootloader on devices, I noticed that false information and beliefs are sprding around the world and more and more people think (and tell!) other users, that their warranty will be voided after particular device. This is not true!

In the past I wrote a short article on xda-developers about warranties and why, against common believes, flashing custom ROMs does not void your warranty. You can find this thrd here.

Here's some information worth pointing out:Warranty is a contract. In every country there are laws and regulations about warranties, however these vary from place to place and may be slightly different in your country, keep that in mind.If it's a contract, then both sides have some obligations and rights. Both - rights and obligations - needs to be written in the warranty, otherwise they doesn't exist. Warranty statements must be consistent with erally applicable law.As a contract, warranty can be crted as the parties want, as long as it'sconsistent with erally applicable law.To know exactly what's written in your warranty don't try to Google it - take it out of the box and RD IT. Don't trust what others say - their warranty might be different to your own.Now, the question is - why the bootloader doesn't void the warranty? The answer is very simple.Because 's warranty contract doesn't state it. The only information about warranty on htev.com you can find is this:

So, once again:
"It is our responsibility to caution you that not all claims resulting or caused by or from the of the bootloader may be covered under warranty."
Is there any information, that bootloader voids warranty? Nope. So basically, what does it mn? Only this - if you brick your device as a result of e.g. flashing custom ROM (unlocked bootloader allows you doing that), you may have no warranty claim for that particular incident.
Two more important things to conclude:If "not all claimsmay be covered under warranty", then (logic conversion)some claims may still be covered under warranty.Even if you can't claim something under warranty because it was caused by or from the of the bootloader, that doesn't mn you have lost your warranty. You still have your warranty and you still can claim under warranty, but this warranty won't cover those particular claims caused by or from the of the bootloader.So basically, warns you, that some of the actions you might take after the bootloader may ld to a situation, when particular issue can't be covered under warranty.
Also, this information on htev.com doesn't expand orrestrictyour warranty terms. It doesn't change it at all. If warranty is given in the paper form, then as a contract the only way to change it, is a paper form too (if not stated otherwise in the warranty itself). just kindly reminds you some sort of information you can conclude from the warranty itself.
Once again, if you are interested why flashing custom ROMs doesn't void warranty as well, plse rd this thrd.
PS. I'm also wondering why users are so crazy about so called flash counter and "Triangle Away" appliion. They don't need it to have a valid warranty, even with a yellow triangle.

Disclaimer:

This text is just for eduion purpose. It's not a law itself so you can't base your claims versus a company on this. I may be wrong in many parts - feel free to write a comment under this post and I will make any necessary corrections. I don't know the laws in every country so there may be some slight differences.

Google+ Sign-In Now Part of Google Play Services

Posted by Reto Meier, Android Developer Relations and Matt Wad, Google+

Google Play Services is our platform for offering you better integration with Google products, and providing new capabilities to use within your apps. Today we’re rolling out Google Play services v3.0, which includes Google+ Sign-In and Google Maps Android API improvements.

Google+ Sign-In

Google+ Sign-In lets users sign in to your Android app with their existing Google credentials, and bring along their Google+ info for an upgraded experience. In addition to basic authentiion, today’s relse includes ftures that can accelerate both app downloads and engagement.

Over-the-air installs from your websiteAfter signing in with Google on your web site, users will now have the option to install your Android app on their devices instantly. They’ll enjoy a smless desktop-to-mobile experience, and you’ll be able to drive more downloads. Linking your web site and Android apps is as simple as registering your project and clients with the Google APIs console.

App customizationWhen users sign in with Google, they can now bring their Google+ info with them (like their public profile, and the people in their circles). This lets your app welcome them by name, display their picture, connect them with friends, and lots more.

Interactive postsShares from your app can now include calls to action (like “listen,” “RSVP,” and “check-in”), custom thumbnails, and brand attribution — all of which help them stand out in users’ Google+ strms. Clicking on an interactive post can also deep link to a specific piece of content inside your app, further improving engagement.

App activity that’s useful, not annoyingUsers’ app activities will only be visible to the Google+ circles they specify (if any), and they’ll only appr when they’re relevant. Putting users in control, and not spraying their strm builds trust in your app, and encourages mningful sharing.

Msure and monitor metricsOnce your Google+ Sign-In integration is live, you’ll be able to msure and monitor downloads, total users, interactive post performance, and other metrics. To set up Google+ Platform Insights for your Android app, simply connect it with your Google+ page.

More about Google+ Sign-InTo lrn more about integrating with Google+ Sign-In, visit our developer docs. You can also rd our announcement on the Google+ Developers Blog, or download some of the first apps to include this functionality.

Google Maps Android API v2

This relse includes fixes for more than 20 bugs, including half of the top 10 issues filed in the Google Maps API issue tracker. These include improvements to map rendering and the behavior of markers and info.

Also included are ftures like native support for new map shapes such as circles, anti-clockwise polygons, and the OnMyLoionChangeListener event, which is called when a change in loion is detected.

Check out the product documentation for a complete set of relse notes.

The only One

Some high quality pictures of new flagship device - the One.

Many people alrdy asked me about the colors of One and which one is better. I was holding both versions side to side and in rlity silver one looks better in my opinion. On thepictures, the black one looks very good too, but when holding a silver One you can see how the aluminium zero-gaps body is shining and it looks rllygorgeous. Black version doesn't reflect light that much but some potential scratches might be lessvisiblethere, which is an advantage. So, which color will you pick? :)

Many of those revolved around which APIs to use for a specific purpose. Let's look at how to use cryptography to safely store user credentials, such as s and auth tokens, on local storage.

An anti-pattern

A common (but incorrect) pattern that we've recently become aware of is to use SecureRandom as a mns of erating deterministic material, which would then be used to encrypt local credential caches. Examples are not hard to find, such as here, here, here, and elsewhere.

In this pattern, rather than storing an encryption directly as a string inside an APK, the uses a proxy string to erate the instd — similar to a passphrase. This essentially obfuses the so that it's not rdily visible to attackers. However, a skilled attacker would be able to sily see around this strategy. We don't recommend it.

The fact is, Android's existing security model alrdy provides plenty of protection for this kind of data. User credentials should be stored with the MODE_PRIVATE flag set and stored in internal storage, rather than on an SD card, since permissions aren't enforced on external storage. Combined with device encryption, this provides protection from most types of attacks targeting credentials.

However, there's another problem with using SecureRandom in the way described above. Starting with Android 4.2, the default
SecureRandom provider is OpenSSL, and a developer can no longer override SecureRandom’s internal state. Consider the following :

SecureRandom secureRandom = new SecureRandom();
byte[] b = new byte[] { (byte) 1 };
secureRandom.setSeed(b);
// Prior to Android 4.2, the next line would always return the same !
System.out.println(secureRandom.nextInt());

The old Bouncy Castle-based implementation allowed overriding the internally erated, /dev/urandom based for ch SecureRandom instance. Developers which attempted to explicitly seed the random would find that their seed replaces, not supplements, the existing seed (contrary to the reference implementation’s documentation). Under OpenSSL, this error-prone behavior is no longer possible.

Unfortunately, appliions who relied on the old behavior will find that the output from SecureRandom changes randomly every time their appliion starts up. (This is actually a very desirable trait for a random !) Attempting to obfuse encryption in this manner will no longer work.

The right way

A more rsonable approach is simply to erate a truly random AES when an appliion is first launched:

public static Secret erate() throws NoSuchAorithmException {
// erate a 256-bit
final int outputLength = 256;

SecureRandom secureRandom = new SecureRandom();
// Do *not* seed secureRandom! Automatically seeded from system entropy.
= .getInstance("AES");
.init(outputLength, secureRandom);
Secret = .erate();
return ;
}

Note that the security of this approach relies on safeguarding the erated , which is is predied on the security of the internal storage. Lving the target file unencrypted (but set to MODE_PRIVATE) would provide similar security.

Even more security

If your app needs additional encryption, a recommended approach is to require a passphase or PIN to access your appliion. This passphrase could be fed into PBKDF2 to erate the encryption . (PBKDF2 is a commonly used aorithm for deriving material from a passphrase, using a technique known as " stretching".) Android provides an implementation of this aorithm inside SecretFactory as PBKDF2WithHmacSHA1:

public static Secret erate(char[] passphraseOrPin, byte[] salt) throws NoSuchAorithmException, InvalidSpecException {
// of PBKDF2 hardening rounds to use. Larger values incrse
// computation time. You should select a value that causes computation
// to take >100ms.
final int iterations = 1000;

// erate a 256-bit
final int outputLength = 256;

SecretFactory secretFactory = SecretFactory.getInstance("PBKDF2WithHmacSHA1");
Spec Spec = new PBESpec(passphraseOrPin, salt, iterations, outputLength);
Secret secret = secretFactory.erateSecret(Spec);
return secret;
}

The salt should be a random string, again erated using SecureRandom and persisted on internal storage alongside any encrypted data. This is important to mitigate the risk of attackers using a rainbow table to precompute hashes.

Check your apps for proper use of SecureRandom

As mentioned above and in the New Security Ftures in Jelly Bn, the default implementation of SecureRandom is changed in Android 4.2. Using it to deterministically erate is no longer possible.

If you're one of the developers who's been erating the wrong way, we recommend upgrading your app today to prevent subtle problems as more users upgrade to devices running Android 4.2 or later.

Android Tablet Will Ld Tablet Market

Android Tablet getting into various tablet market share. Android market in 2013 will expand because some vendors have also started using Google's open operating system. Android is not only used as a base tablets, smart as well - it could be a variety of gadgets linked to the Internet.
Android Tablet expansion is not only done by giants , Amazon and the owner of Android Operating System, Google, but also carried out by electronics company that alrdy has a name, such as Polaroid and Hewlett Packard. Although better known as a different brand of the product, at lst - their tablet more sily attract the attention of consumers.
Resrch Institute IDC (International Data Corp.) had predicted that tablet shipments in this yr that use Google Inc's Android devices will exceed iPad. IPad shipments will control 46% of the tablet market this yr, down from 51% last yr. Mnwhile, the market share of devices using Android is expected to rise from 42% to 49% this yr.
According to IDC, sales of Android tablets that are smaller and cer, from Google to Amazon.com Inc. will incrse this yr. Along with the growing of consumers, 's dominance will also decrse since the iPad first launched in 2010.
Android tablet expansion not only in the secondary market that officially more sily monitored, the expansion of the same magnitude occurred in the market. Many tablets are manufactured by local firms using the Android operating system, sold cly to users with lower economic class.
Android tablets are not just grab the iPad market, but also established a new market by selling tablets at a bargain price with a base Android operating system that is open and continuous update by Google, local producers do not need to pay for resrch and development. Their products will also never "outdated".
Competition in the tablet market has begun to ht since rly last yr. When Amazon launched its first tablet, the Kindle Fire, Android-based 7-inch and priced at under 200USD, the price is lowered and the iPad immediately announced to launch iPad Mini.
Followed by the presence of Google 7 with the latest Android base, also sold at a low price, then the vendor to make corrections on the cost of production so that they could sell the tablet at a cer price. Since then the price of tablets entering the era of c tablets
Although it is not rational to follow the trend crted by Amazon, because Kindle Fire it functioned as a device to download and shop at the online store Amazon. Gain on sale of Kindle Fire will be obtained from the customers who download content from Amazon.
The era of c Android tablet marked with the offered with a 7-inch tablet, priced at 150-250 USD. More and more vendors are using the Android operating system, as well as local vendors producing c Android tablet and crte their own market. Of course, these conditions eroded the dominance of the iPad is sold with high prices and eventually Android will become the lder in the tablet market.

Virtual SD card on Android

Since Android Honeycomb, Google changed the way to manage internal memory on Android devices. Before Honeycomb, every user had one separate partition on his device called userdata (/data), where he could install appliions and where all user settings were stored (home screens, appliions data, contacts, and all the rest you loose after doing so called "full wipe" on your device). Apart of userdata partition, all Android devices had microSD card slot to save pictures, , backups etc.. Now it looks completely different, but let's start from the beginning. There are several approaches to this subject, I'll present here all those I am aware of.

userdata partition + microSD card
This is the mentioned above pre-Honeycomb approach. There isuserdata partition, where you can install all your appliions and you also have a possibility to insert microSD card. Nothing more to explain. Only devices running Android Gingerbrd and older versions have such configuration, so it's getting less and less popular.

userdata partition + virtual SD card on userdata partition
This is the new approach presented for the first time in Honeycomb. Instd of having /data partition together with expandable microSD card slot of any capacity, Google decided for something different. Instd, /data partition became very large (16/32/64 GB) and inside you can find /data/media folder that contains all the files you can see as your SD card content. How does it work? Without too much technical explanations, there is so called fuse tool which emulates media folder inside userdata partition as a separate storage device. As a result, after connecting smartphone to the PC you can browse the content of /data/media loion, so if it was a microSD card. The biggest downside of such approach is a high risk of loosing all your virtual SD card content in case of any serious /data partition failure. Also, such partition can't be formatted with mkfs.ext4 without loosing content of virtual SD card, because you can't format device partition just partially. You can use e2fsck tool to check for potential errors, but sometimes partition format is the only way out. How does "full wipe" work then? Well, it's a little bit complied. First of all, you can't format mounted (in use) partition. You need to unmount it first. Once unmounted userdata partition, you can't flash any ZIP file from inside recovery, because ZIPs files are stored on virtual SD card (/data/media) and remember that userdata partition is currently unmounted, because we want to format it. There is a workaround for it - you can run mkfs.ext4 from inside /cache partition or you can use command prompt. Now, what if you need to remove the whole content of your userdata partition, but you want to keep virtual SD card content at the same time? There is a workaround for this as well, but instd of formatting entire partition, you need to remove all files excluding /data/media loion. Example:
#!/tmp/bash
# Remove content of /data partition excluding data/media files
/data
FILES=(*)
for i in *; do
if [ "$i" != "media" ]
then rm -R "$i"
fi
done

This way you can sort of wipe userdata, but it doesn't format the partition, so you can't fix file-system with it. Why this point is the longest one? Because it took me quite a few words to explain the relation between virtual SD card and media folder on userdata partition (/data/media). So basically, what you rd here applies to every configuration with virtual SD card emulated on userdata partition.

userdata partition + virtual SD card on a separate partition
This approach is not very popular, and it's a shame because it seems to be much more practical rather than the previous one. Instd of emulating SD card from userdata partition, there is a separate, large partition with vFAT file-system. That mns you can format your userdata partition anytime you want without loosing content of your virtual SD card, or from inside custom ROM, because userdata can be freely unmounted. The only device I've seen so far with this approach was One X.

userdata partition + virtual SD card on userdata partition + microSD card
This seems to be the most desirable solution for many Android users. It works similar to approach described in the second point, so everything I wrote about /data/media is valid here as well. However, every user have the ability to insert extra microSD card inside his device, so he can sily backup virtual SD card to microSD card or format userdata partition without loosing all pictures etc. (if previously stored on microSD card). This is the most common configuration for devices. But having removable microSD card is not only an advantage. First of all, any kind of microSD card (even SDHC) will be always slower than internal eMMC memory. It depends on many factors like card speed (class 2, 4, 6, 8 or even 10), on-board controller, I/O scheduler and more. Secondly, microSD card damage risk is higher then damage risk of internal eMMC memory. Out of question is the benefit to expand the memory with 64 GB microSD card, but it's definitely the minority of power users, who are buying large capacity cards. For the vast majority of users, internal memory with 32 GB capacity is more then enough to store theirfavoritemusic or pictures.

userdata partition + virtual SD card on a separate partition + microSD card
This approach is theoretically possible, but personally I've never seen device with such combination. For me, this is the best combination. You have possibility to use external microSD card and virtual SD card is not a part of userdata partition, but it has it's own, separate vFat partition.Such configuration gives you control over all your data and possibility to manage it however you want.

Removable battery - do we rlly need it?

With every relse of a new smartphone the same question is asked - will it have removable battery? If you believe that removable batteries are a "must have" nowadays, plse keep rding. I hope you'll change your mind!
First of all - there is a solution. Battery banks seems to be a grt alternative for removable batteries. You can check my review of Battery Bank here. It works with every device equipped with micro-USB port. Now let's compare both solutions.Capacity
Galaxy S3 has a removable battery with capacity of 2100mAh. Typical battery bank has a capacity of 6000mAh. This mns, that Galaxy S3 can be charged almost 3 times with such battery bank! If you are going to use your smartphone hvily the whole day, only one backup battery might be not enough for you. With battery bank you can start your day with more then 8000mAh on board (battery inside device + battery bank).
Conclusion: 2300mAh vs. 6000mAhWinner: battery bank

SizeTypical smartphone battery dimensions are around 6,3 x 5,0 x 0,5. Battery bank I was tested is of course bigger - 9,7 x 4,2 x 2,2. Is it rlly a disadvantage? I don't think so. It's small enough to be inserted into a pocket of your jns or jacket. I think there are even smaller battery banks available on the market, so the size shouldn't be a problem here. Also, removable batteries are indeed smaller, but keep in mind their capacity is twice/triply lower.
Conclusion:6,3 x 5,0 x 0,5vs9,7 x 4,2 x 2,2Winner: removable battery
ChargingBattery bank can be charged regardless of device battery. It has its own USB cable and charging port, so you can charge both devices - smartphone and battery bank at the same time. What about removable batteries? Well, if you don't have a removable battery charger (which costs extra money of course!) you will have to charge battery inside your device first, then switch batteries and charge the backup battery. The risk of braking battery cover latches is quite big, especially when it comes to plastic, which has its own lifetime and bending abilities. It seems that battery bank in this case is much moreconvenient andcomfortable.
Conclusion: charging inside the device vs.independent chargingWinner: battery bank
PriceOriginal backup battery price is about $30. Yes, I know you can find non-original replacements for $10 as well, but let's compare only original parts. Typical battery bank costs is around $40 - $80($75 for Battery Bank). However these prices vary from place to place and may be slightly different in your country, keep that in mind. Comparing 1:1 it's sy to see that external batteries are indeed cer. But to make the comparison fair, we need to establish the price/capacity relationship. 1mAh from 2300mAh backup battery ($30) is a cost of about $0,0130, while1mAh from 6000mAh battery bank ($75) costs about $0,0125.
Conclusion: $0,0130 vs. $0,0125Winner: battery bank
DesignWhen spking about the design I mostly think about device design. However, battery banks looks definitely better and more aesthetic than regular removable batteries. Having a removable battery back cover doesn't allow uni-body construction, like One has. Design is a matter of taste, but personally I prefer uni-body construction over having a plastic back cover. But again - it's a matter of taste, so no winner here.
Conclusion: plastic back cover vs. uni-body constructionWinner: draw
UsabilityPractical approach is also important. Driving a car or sitting in a crowded bus might be a situation when your device is out of power. Now imagine you need to: 1) take out your battery backup, 2) turn off the device, 3) remove the back cover, 4) replace the battery, 5) close the back cover, 6) turn on the device, 7) hide your primary battery. So... 7 steps including theinevitability of turning off the device. With battery bank you just need to take it out and plug into the device. That's it. No need to turn on/off ordisassemble your device. Keep in mind that battery bank doesn't work only as external battery, it is mainly a battery charger, so after some time you can hide it back.
Conclusion: 7 steps to change battery vs. take out and plug inWinner: battery bank
CompatibilityExternal batteries are not compatible between devices. You can't use Galaxy Note II battery in Galaxy S3. You can't use Sensation battery in One S. If you buy backup battery for your particular device, you'll probably sell it together with the device or give it as free bonus one day.Battery bank is compatible with every device equipped with micro-USB port and can be your life-companion for yrs. However, you should be aware that battery bank might not be able to charge your tablet.
Conclusion: lack of compatibility with other devices vs. compatibility with all micro-USB smartWinner: battery bank

Device lifetime (added 23-03-2013)
Due to many comments under this article I decided to agree with one point that was very often mentioned by users preferring removable battery. However, I think it needs some bigger explanation. It is a fact, that having non removable battery results in lack of possibility to exchange it for new one, once the old battery can't give your device enough power anymore. But is it rlly a problem? I took the warranty statements from my One X+ and I found nothing about limited warranty for battery (like have - only 6 months). This mns, that once battery is non removable, it doesn't have shorter warranty. So in my case battery is under 24-months warranty service. I think that is a positive aspect for the consumer, right? In some cases it might be also 12-months, but it depends on particular law regulations in ch country.

Conclusion: removable battery with 6-months warranty vs. non-removable battery with 12/24-months warranty -both solutions have some advantages
Winner: draw

Possibility to reset the device (added 25-03-2013)
One more egory added. Very often I hr that possibility to remove the battery is the only way to reset the device once it's not rcting anymore and system just hanged. This is not true. Every device have ability to reset the system using hardware . In most cases it's a combination of 3 buttons:power+ volume up + volume down. You need to hold these buttons for about 5-20 seconds, depends on the device. Even if your device has a removable battery, it is better to use above combination to avoid brking the plastic back cover latches.

Conclusion:you can reset your device no matter if it has removable battery or notWinner: draw

So what's the score? Battery bank won in 5 comparisons, external battery in 1 comparison and there were also 3 draws. For me, personally, battery banks are better replacement for external batteries. It gives you bigger capacity for the same prize, extended usability and it looks better.
